Route

The largest open-air museum in Lower Austria shows the everyday life of a Weinviertler (wine region) village from yesteryear. Around 80 buildings from two centuries have been rebuilt in the Museum Village Niedersulz (Museumsdorf Niedersulz). They include buildings like farm houses, craftsmen’s houses, chapels, stables, an inn, a school, wine press houses and a cellar lane.

Unique are the colourful cottage gardens in the Museum Village. The flower gardens, herbal gardens and vegetable gardens are all cultivated with authentic plant rarities and typical regional flora according to ecological guidelines.

Highlights

Blooming Gardens, Flowery Meadows and Fruit Trees

The Museum Village covers 22 hectares: blooming gardens and agricultural zones show about 600 fruit trees of 400 ancient varieties, a meadow orchard, historical vine cultures, a cabbage field as well as a school garden and bible garden.

Unique are the colourful cottage gardens in the Museum Village. The typical regional front gardens with old varieties of flowers along the village as well as the herb and vegetable gardens with authentic plant rarities are cultivated according to ecological guidelines.

Enjoyment and Pure Relaxation
The Village Inn on the Village Square (Dorfplatz) with an attached and cosy conservatory offers regional and seasonal dishes.

Two playgrounds, picnic areas and a museum shop with products from the region complete the extensive offer of the Museum Village.

In the Cellar Lane, with its winepress houses, wine producers from the region always present their delicacies at the weekends.

The “Living Farm”, with its old domestic animal breeds such as pigs, goats, geese, chickens, donkeys and rabbits, is a highlight for young and old.

On every 1st & 3rd Sunday of the month, children and their parents will gain a lot of knowledge and learn interesting facts on the Betty Bernstein Family Tours and try and solve “New Riddles of the Treasures of a Weinviertel Village around 1900“.

Lively Village Life
Numerous events liven up the Museum Village during the season. On special days, so-called “Theme Days”, the traditional work of rural life from times gone by – such as “Federn schleiß´n”, “Drischl dreschn´n” and “Waz auslesn´n” – can be tried out by you, on your own!

In keeping with the motto “Look – Marvel – Ask – Participate”, every Sunday and public holiday afternoon and on Saturday afternoons during the summer holidays from 13:00 – 17:00, you have the opportunity to actively experience individual houses, courtyards and workshops of the Village Museum. Cultural mediators and artisans talk about village life as it was in the old days; they are available for questions and show forgotten craft techniques, in addition they offer you the opportunity to participate.

Exhibitions such as: “Bauernleben im Wandel” (Farmer’s Life in Transition), the “Kummet Ausstellung” (Harness Exhibition) or the “Schulausstellung” (School Exhibition), document the Weinviertel’s cultural history.
